Event Submissions

In addition to the standard conference presentations, we want to include MORE. Workshops, contests, and social events are all being planned. But the planning staff is a little overwhelmed with, well, everything else! We need champions to help make these happen.

The process is simple. Start with an idea. Write a sentence or three that describes the idea. Decide what you would need in terms of space, time, etc. Send those details to info@cossfest.ca. Then follow up to make sure the idea is implemented the way you envisioned.

With regards to contests, you will also need to submit the rules (so we can post them up here and competitors will know what is fair game or not).

The time line for these submissions is:

  • 1 Sep 2009 - Submissions are opened. (i.e. we'll start taking them.)
  • 15 Feb 2010 - Submissions are closed. If you miss this deadline, your thing will not happen (this year).
  • 1 Mar 2010 - COSSFEST schedule, including contests, workshops, and events is posted. Contest rules, and workshop details are also posted.
  • 1 Mar 2010 - Contestant submissions begin.
  • 1 Apr 2010 - Contestant submissions close.
  • 9/10 Apr 2010 - COSSFEST takes place, contests are run, workshops are done, parties go down, etc.
  • 11 Apr 2010 - Recovery begins. Stress levels recede, hang-overs are nursed, equipment gets accounted for, etc.
  • 18 Apr 2010 - Contest results are all posted, any leftover details are taken care of

That should cover just about all contingencies.

Just stay in good communications with the planning staff (via info@cossfest.ca) so everything can be co-ordinated as best as possible.

Preferences

Preference will be given to events that:

  • are legal
  • encourage team efforts - especially if collaboration between teams is needed
  • require Open Source knowledge or skills
  • can fit in one of the rooms (though the contests do not have to be fully contained within the facilities - i.e. scavenger hunts)
  • include audience participation
  • are FUN!

We don't expect the events to meet ALL these points, but you stand a better chance of being selected if you can cover most of them.
